Integrated Learning Assignments

Approximately once per term, or four times per year, students are assigned a major research project.  Some of the work is done in class, but the majority is done at home.  Major assignments and approximate due dates will be posted here.

Our next major project will be a science fair project.  We are reviewing the scientific method and experimental design.  Sixth grade students may do a demonstration, 7th and 8th grade students must do an experiment.  A packet of information, including rubrics and a time schedule, will go home on December 5th.

Science

We are learning about scientific inquiry and gearing up for our science fair.  Project questions are due December 7th.

Math

We have group lessons on skills essential to successful completion of math exit skills. Practice activities are given to be worked on in school. A daily homework assignment is also given, to be completed and turned in the next day. Regular tests and quizzes measure students' understanding of the lessons.

Social Studies

Our focus this year is American History. We will start by looking briefly at the events that caused Europeans to begin exloring and settling in the New World. From there we will continue through Colonial America as a review for most students.

Every Friday, students are to turn in a current events assignment. This is a two paragraph writing assignment where students choose an article within the topics of science or social studies from a credible print or web source. They are to write a one paragraph summary and a one paragraph opinion. A format has been given to students to help them organize this assignment.

Language Arts

Students have a daily journal, which is used to chart progress in written expression and language mechanics. In addition, creative writing assignments, a personal spelling list, and daily reading move students forward in their language arts curriculum. In-class activities include writing process, outlining techniques, note-taking techniques, and language mechanics. Students also get practice in speaking and listening. This section will be updated regularly with the current focus in language arts.

This session in literature circles, we are delving into social issues and conflict.  Our books will not be long, but intense.

Targets for December 11th will be to complete the assigned book:

  • Catcher in the Rye
  • To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Hatchet
  • Roll My Thunder, Hear My Cry
  • White Fang
  • Island of the Blue Dolphins

For this book, we will be discussing social issues, and students will write an persuasive essay about a current social issue.  Rough drafts are due December 11th and final copies, along with a short persuasive speech are due on December 18th.

Learning by Teaching

Display boards are just one part of the multi-disciplinary project.  This shows the creativity of one student in creating a board depicting the rainforest habitat of Madagascar.
